This weekend the majority of the United States will “spring forward” an hour. At 2am on Sunday morning, clocks in almost every state will immediately skip to 3am. That means you potentially lose an hour of sleep, and that when you wake up it will likely be a bit brighter outside than it was when you woke up at the “same” time on Saturday.

We’ll stick with this time until November 1, when clocks will “fall back” at 2am and we’ll all score that extra hour of sleep back.

If you have your smartphone set up to detect the time automatically, then it should change on its own tonight. That means you won’t have to do a ton to prep on that front.

If you have any manual clocks, then you may want to go ahead and adjust those now or make a mental list of the clocks you need to adjust in the morning.

If you’re having trouble with the time change come the morning, experts recommend avoiding naps and tons of caffeine, and instead, going outside and getting as much sunlight as possible. Sunlight naturally tells our body to wake up, and can be a natural way to help you get yourself on the right schedule.

Experts also recommend getting up at the same time on Sunday that you normally do, even if you’re tired. While sleeping in that extra hour might feel good now, you’re only setting yourself up for failure the next day.

The same goes for naps. Taking a nap in the middle of the day can throw off your circadian rhythm and ultimately make getting on the “new” time even harder. The same goes for coffee. While that extra cup in the afternoon might help you make it through the day, it also might cause you to stay up a bit longer than you would have, ultimately hurting your ability to sleep come Sunday evening.
